The story began when Bill Ganskopp couldn't get a caddie.
He didn't believe he should ride to play golf. And he sure wasn't happy about lugging his bag around the long, hilly course at Red Fox Country Club near Columbus, here in the mountain foothills of western North Carolina.
You see, back in 1969 Red Fox had a good caddie program. Young people were glad to carry Bill's bag, while he worked on lowering his handicap. In fact, Golf Digest that year published a list of America's Most-Improved Amateur Golfers?and on that list was W.F. Ganskopp.
But once autumn classes began, his caddies went back to school. An avid player, Bill needed a caddie at least three times every week, on weekdays.
